Checks, captures, threats — every one, in order

Every coach tells you to look at checks, captures and threats before you move. Almost nobody actually does it, because it's never been practised. This drill makes it a routine: three short stages, one position, every forcing move found.

What it trains

  • Listing every check available, including the ugly ones
  • Finding every capture, not just the obvious recapture
  • Spotting threats that win material or mate next move

How it works

  1. 01

Stage one: draw an arrow for every check you have.

  2. 02

Stage two: every capture. Stage three: every threat.

  3. 03

See what you missed in each stage and how your rating moved.

Why it stops blunders

Club games are decided by forcing moves. If you check every check, capture and threat before you play, you find the tactics you'd otherwise miss — and you catch the ones your opponent is setting up.

FAQ

Is this the same CCT method coaches teach?
Yes — checks, then captures, then threats. The drill just turns the advice into something you repeat until it's automatic.
Can I practise one stage at a time?
Yes. There are separate drills for checks only, captures only and threats only.
How long does one rep take?
Usually under a minute. A full session fits in five minutes.

Five minutes. One habit. No signup.
