Just make a reasonable move
You don't need the best move — you need a move that isn't a blunder. This drill gives you a random position and accepts anything within about half a pawn of the engine's top choice. It trains the most underrated skill in club chess: playing a solid move every time.
What it trains
- Avoiding blunders in unfamiliar positions
- A quick safety check before every move
- Being satisfied with good moves instead of hunting for brilliant ones
How it works
- 01
A random position appears with you to move.
- 02
Play any move you think is reasonable.
- 03
The engine grades it gently: within ~50 centipawns of best passes.
Why it stops blunders
Most games below 1400 are lost by one bad move, not won by one great one. A player who never blunders, even with unambitious moves, beats a player who finds brilliancies but hangs a piece every few games.
FAQ
- What does ~50cp mean?
- Roughly half a pawn. If your move is within that margin of the engine's best move, it counts as reasonable.
- Isn't this just an engine telling me what to play?
- The engine only grades your move after you play it. It never suggests anything, and many moves can pass.
- Who is this for?
- Players who keep losing to a single mistake and want to build a habit of safe, solid moves.
